Our approach

Montessori, in plain language

No jargon, no dictionary required. Here is what actually happens in a Smallville Montessori classroom, and why.

Montessori simply means we follow the child. Children choose meaningful work and repeat it until it clicks. The materials are self-correcting, which means a child discovers their own mistakes without an adult pointing them out. That is where independence and concentration are born.

At Smallville Montessori, every child is welcome. We are an inclusive school, which means children who need extra learning or developmental support grow and learn alongside their classmates in a caring Montessori environment, not apart from them.

Five hallmarks of our program

Multi-age groupings

Each class spans three age levels. Younger children learn from older ones, and older children build confidence as they lead. The classroom becomes a family setting with realistic expectations and boundaries.

Focus on nature

Lessons often incorporate natural science and outdoor exploration, and encourage a love for the natural world.

Self-correcting materials

The school uses Montessori materials of increasing complexity. Because they are self-correcting, children learn through their own discovery rather than being told they were wrong.

Learning by doing

Real experiences like cooking, playdates, and visits from resource people hold an important place, and children re-create them through discussion, drawing, music, movement, measuring, building, and dramatic play.

The whole child

Each level has a lead teacher and a teacher-partner who care for the children’s welfare as well as their work. The emphasis is on guiding the child toward becoming self-reliant and emotionally stable.

“A small village — a place small enough that every child is known by name, and every family is part of something.”
